Generic App Integration with Nova
Today, Nova only integrates with EHRs through its UHI (Universal Healthcare Interface). However, this is limited only to a sub-set of the healthcare market. Some EHRs, like Meditech, charge the customer 5k per External Connector configuration which is what is required to integrate with Nova. Some applications, like those in Home Health, have no integration capabilities and are built to be ran offline.
The solution is to build a native "Nova App".
This app lives in the Systray or Windows Toolbar. When you log in, it securely SSO you in as well, either through the IdP or Imprivata, or allows you to log in manually.
Once logged in, it contains an Application Profile that it looks for. This profile tells the Nova App which application to look for, which page of the app to look for, and how to get information out of the application. When that target application runs, for example Expanse, the Nova App will detect that Expanse is in focus and happens to be on an Encounter. From there, all Patient / Encounter forms can be looked-up and surfaced in our application.
This Nova App was demoed 10 years ago. When the EHR Encounter was in focus, you would move your mouse to the right of the screen and it would trigger a Forms window to slide out, keeping the Encounter visible but also providing access to all forms for that encounter, with the ability to add new forms. Not a single click was necessary perform this action.
Imagine you want to offer a low cost Home Health solution where the target product has no integration capabilities. How much of an edge would we have if we could integrate with it, regardless?
This Nova App also acts as a base for all types of solutions that may necessitate an native component. The only hesitation would be around Citrix integration. However, fewer and fewer customers are using Citrix.
